Questions to consider for your market research survey

Use these questions as suggestions when editing your copy. Keep the ones that fit your purpose and add any details your process needs.

  • What problem are you trying to solve in this area?
  • How do you deal with it today?
  • What matters most when choosing a solution?
  • When did you last buy or use something in this category?
  • Which alternatives did you consider?
  • What would make you decide against a product like this?

How to use the responses

Define the audience before distributing the survey. Look for patterns and differences, and combine responses with other evidence before deciding what to build or sell.

Start with a research decision

Choose one main decision before adding questions. You might want to understand an unmet need, compare product concepts, or learn how people choose between alternatives. Those objectives require different questions and may require different respondents.

Ask about recent behavior before hypothetical preferences where that behavior is relevant. Someone saying they like an idea is different from someone describing a problem they have paid to solve. Report who answered, how they were recruited, and the limits of the sample alongside the findings.

How to customize and share this template

  1. Write down the decision the research should inform and define who can give relevant answers.
  2. Adapt the questions to the audience. Ask one thing at a time, use balanced choices, and offer a suitable way to say that a question does not apply.
  3. Try the survey with a small relevant group, fix confusing wording, and decide how you will review responses before sharing it more widely.

Frequently asked questions

How many responses do I need for market research?
It depends on the audience, decision, and research method. A small exploratory survey can reveal questions to investigate, but it should not be presented as representative of a whole market.
Can I customize this survey template?
Yes. Choose Use this template to make your own copy in Youform. Edit the questions and colors, review the whole flow, then share a link or embed it on your website. See Youform plans for advanced features.
How do I avoid leading survey questions?
Ask about one topic at a time, use neutral wording, and avoid describing the answer you hope to receive. Balanced options and an appropriate not-applicable choice help respondents answer more accurately.
How many responses do I need for useful research?
It depends on the decision, the audience, and how participants are selected. A small group can reveal issues worth exploring, but it does not establish what a whole market thinks. Decide what conclusions your sample can support before reporting them.
Can I use this survey to validate a new business idea?
It can help you explore needs, objections, and alternatives with a relevant audience. Treat stated interest as one input, then compare it with interviews, observed behavior, or other evidence before making a large commitment.
